Bill Gato Bill Gato is a Miami-based rock, pop and Afro-Latin fusion drummer and a music instructor at Miami Dade College’s Music Learning Center. He teaches the Rock Band for Teens class and several private students of various ages.
Born and raised in Miami of Cuban descent, Gato began drumming at the age of 12 by practicing on encyclopedias. His sister’s boyfriend, Tony Fernandez, a high school marching band leader, sold Gato his first drumset when Gato was 16. During high school, Gato formed his first original rock band, The Set, which released an eight-song LP of original songs when he was 17.
During most of the 1990s and 2000s, Gato played drums for several South Florida rock bands, including Diablo Tun Tun, The Boondocks, 100 Fires and El Globo de Matias. All of these bands released CDs of original material. He currently plays drums for El Globo de Matias, Retro-Sky and Three Sheets to the Wind.
Between 1995 and 2005, Gato studied with renowned Cuban drumset teacher Daniel Perez, who was a direct student of legendary New York drum teacher, Henry Adler. Adler was the teacher of Buddy Rich, who is considered the greatest drummer that ever lived. Gato mastered the Adler-Rich Technique, which stresses ambidexterity, refined hand technique, efficiency of motion and sight reading.
With over 20 years of experience as a local rock musician and over 15 over years of experience in the radio and media industry, Gato teaches his Rock Band for Teens students the practical leadership and ensemble skills necessary to start, manage and promote an original rock band. Students learn how to nurture and develop their own talent and confidence; the lost art and craft of songwriting; recognizing and overcoming the personal conflicts and challenges of being in a rock band; how to be musical rock musicians that complement each other; creativity and improvisation techniques; rock music history; and most importantly, the necessary leadership skills to move a band forward to the next level of success. Rock Band for Teens students experience the thrill of performing live concerts, recording demos of their original songs, arranging and performing their own original songs and launching their own bands.
